EU artists launch Stay True to the Law campaign to urge the European Commission to protect music from unauthorized AI use

More than 30 musicians—including Álex Ubago, Rozalén, Sole Giménez, and Marta Santos—have joined the Stay True to the Act campaign, calling for the EU's Artificial Intelligence Act, passed in 2024, to remain steadfast in protecting copyright.

This week, a group of emerging and established artists from across the European Union launched the “Stay True to the Law” initiative, a collaborative video urging EU lawmakers to uphold the Artificial Intelligence Act, which is expected to be passed in 2024. The goal: to prevent generative AI companies from training their systems on music, lyrics, or voices without explicit authorization or compensation to the creators.

In the message, figures such as Álex Ubago remind us that “AI should protect music and those who create it,” while Rozalén emphasizes that it cannot “steal music,” and Sole Giménez, president of the Spanish Academy of Music, warns against the unpunished use of her creations. The goal is to ensure transparency and accountability from companies that use protected content to train AI systems.

The campaign demands that lawmakers maintain the transparency and accountability obligations enshrined in the law, ensuring that AI developers clearly disclose what protected content they use and how authors are compensated. Creators argue that this is the only way to ensure a fair balance between technological innovation and copyright, protecting the sustainability of the European music industry.
